The History of SSF

1993  The Norwegian National Committee on Polar Research was established following political recommendations. The main tasks of the committee is to:
  • Work out propositions to superior, strategic plans for Norwegian Polar research
  • Manage international contacts and nominate representatives to assorted international institutions
  • Initiate Norwegian polar research
  • Advise the Research Council of Norway in matters regarding research in Svalbard. Various Departments such as the Interdepartmental Polar Committee and other authorities with administrative responsibilities in polar areas will also be advised.
1998  March 23, the Research Council of Norway (RCN) established the Svalbard Science Forum (SSF) as a 3-year project to develop Svalbard as a research platform. The Forum will contribute to the coordination of research, logistics and use of land/area for research. Information about infrastructure and research services and activities in Svalbard will also be provided by SSF.

Representatives from The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) - then called The University Courses on Svalbard, Kings Bays AS (KB), Svalbard Samfunnsdrift AS (Svalbard Community Management) (SSD), local representatives and two representatives appointed by NFR were members of the SSF Board.

2001 - 2005 The project was prolonged with a revised mandate in 2001.
2005 September 21, Svalbard Science Forum was revitalized with a new mandate for 3 years and was appointed strategic tasks related to the scientific coordination of research in Svalbard. SSF is a forum for the coordination of and information of all research in Svalbard – both national and internationally.

The following institutions are today represented in the SSF Board: The Research Council of Norway, Norwegian Polar Institute, The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), Kings Bay, the Ny-Ålesund Science Managers Committee (NySMAC), and the Longyearbyen Science and Education Forum (LySEF). SSF is chaired by NFR and the secretariat is run from the Svalbard Science Centre in Longyearbyen. SSF reports to the National Committee for Polar Research and the Interministerial Committee on Polar Affairs.
